The new tax and gambling law in the United Kingdom had a massive impact on online and mobile gambling operators. Since the 1st of October 2014, under the new Gambling Licensing and Advertising Act, all overseas companies who advertised remote gambling services to UK customers had to hold a licence issued by the UK Gambling Commission. A new finance bill was introduced at the same time that from December, gambling operators would be taxed on a place of consumption basis. This meant tax at a projected rate of 15% on gross gambling profits produced by customers in the UK irrespective of where they were based.
