Around the World
Around the World is one of the Playtech creations, an arcade game that chooses to focus on a well known novel written by Jules Verne. It is called “Around the World in 80 Days” and it’s about a small group of people that make a complete journey around the planet in just 80 days, in a time when travel wasn’t as easy as it is now. You will find it to be a decent looking arcade game, with the action revolving around guessing whether a number will be higher or lower than the one shown on the screen.
Graphics & Theme
With Around the World, you’re offered a chance to do a bit of travelling, so that’s what the screen tries to show you. The bottom of the screen shows you the numbers from 1 to 49, plus three other symbols. They are placed on a rotating wheel which is similar to roulette. There are two buttons that you can use there, one called Lower, the other Higher. They are both connected with the magnifier glass under which the symbol stops, the one that tells you the spin’s result. The top part of the game’s screen shows us an image of the ocean and a few transportation means that were available back then. There are two large sail boats to the left and right, plus a hot air balloon and one of the first airplanes, a biplane in this case. All around that image, you will notice five small photos of places you get through along the way, as you travel. The player starts with the locomotive and the safe image, going then through Paris, New York, China and then to London again. Between the objectives there are six spots where the results of the spins and the correct/incorrect guesses are marked.
Special Effects
The game is easy enough to play. You first choose a wager size, after which the game starts and you are presented with the first spin’s result. The numbers go from 1 to 49, so you just have to decide if the number that comes after that will be higher or lower. If you get the number 6 for example, there is a very good chance that a higher number in the 7 to 49 range will come up next, not one from 1 to 5. As you have correct guesses, you advance from one spot to the next, being offered the chance to cash out once you hit each objective. You get paid depending on the number of spins, ranging from 2.5 for 1 spin, to 4 for 4 spins.
Overall
An interesting arcade game, fun enough to keep you occupied for a bit, especially if you’ve read the book and you enjoyed it.
