Derby Day

Derby1

Derby Day can be an exciting game to play, simulating a horse race where you’re trying to guess the outcome correctly, while also placing wagers on the participants. This arcade game comes from Playtech and it places you in a position with a bird eye view of the race track, adding all around it options you can use while playing.

Graphics & Theme

This horse racing arcade game is quite interestingly made, with a decent design (though not spectacular). To start with, you will notice at the top the logo, plus a small box describing the track conditions on that day (at this moment for example, the going is HARD, while the weather shows a full sun). The left side column gives you the six participants to the race, horses with names like Sibelius, Prodigal Son, Daily Dynamite, Happy Hoofs, Corner Kick and Bottle of Smoke, plus the number of points they have. The race track is on the right side, with the five game options on top. If you click on the names of the horses, you get small pop-up windows with extra info on each of them, in case it is of help.

Special Effects

To start playing the game, you have to select one of the five types of games available (Winner, Exacta, Place, Show and Pick IV-V). Each one allows you to try and guess something different, as I will explain below. Once the pick and the bet is made, the player starts the race and is taken to the actual game. Depending on his picks and bets, he can win or lose.

The Winner option allows the player to simply choose the horse that he believes will win. Each one has his odds and bets can be placed on multiple horses, as a way of reducing risk.

With Exacta, the player has to mention both the horse that will finish first and the one that will be second. Both guesses need to be right.

Place is the name of the wager that gives the player the option to select a horse that can finish either in first or second place. Both will award a prize, so the chances are better, but the rewards are also smaller.

Show is even better when it comes to odds, as the selected horse has to finish on one of the top three positions. Prizes are once again smaller as a result.

Pick IV-V allows the player to choose 4 or 5 horses, along with the places he believes they’re going to finish on.

Overall

Derby Day is a complex arcade game, with enough options to keep you busy, plus some nice graphics and plenty of action.
