As a fan of westerns and especially the old ones, many of them still shown in black and white, I can tell you that there aren’t that many slot machines out there that will give you this kind of theme. In a 5 reel game that has 25 lines, Playtech offers homage to the work of John Wayne, an actor that made history with his western movies. Also known as The Duke, Wayne appears in this game with real photos in black and white, lifted directly from some of his movies. The wild symbol, the scatter, free games and multipliers are all in this game together, offering us a pretty good time.

Graphics & Theme

I’ve found this western themed slot to be quite enjoyable, with its focus on the famous actor and his movies being quite clear both from the four or so symbols that show him directly, and from the few other symbols that show us objects that he used. Another one that’s inspired by him would be the badge that says The Duke, that being his nickname. Together with the pair of boots, his hat and the red bandana, we get a pretty accurate picture of how John Wayne looked and how he used to dress in these movies. Playing cards are appropriately themed as well, taking us from the 10 card to the Ace. A typical wild west town is found right behind the reels, though we don’t get to see that much of it.

Special Effects

The wild symbol has the only picture of John Wayne that is in color, the other three all being in black and white only. A wild’s role is to act as a substitute for others, though it can’t help the bonus or the scatter symbols to form a new combination. The really good part about this symbol is that it can form its own combinations on active lines, offering for five symbols a total of 5000 coins.

The bonus symbol is the second feature I’m going to cover here, giving the player access to a game called John Wayne’s Ranch, as long as you have three icons of this type on the reels 1, 3 and 5, in any position. Once the game starts, you get an initial 3 games for free, plus the base multiplier at 1x. As you shoot the cans, you can win additional free spins, bigger multipliers, additional bullets, a symbol that re-triggers the free spins for free, a mystery extra wild or mystery extra scatters.

The Duke’s badge is another scatter symbol, which is not limited to appearing only on certain reels. Instead, we get it in whatever position we can, and as long as there are a minimum of three of them, we get the bonus game. Choosing one of the scatter symbols will result in a payout being displayed. It can go up to 120x the bet value.

Overall

John Wayne is a must play slot, especially if you consider yourself a fan of the western genre. It’s not a problem if you haven’t seen his movies, the game will still be fun.
